Why I Challenge My Clients in Therapy: Your Addiction Can’t Bullsh*t Me
Oct 25, 2024When it comes to addiction, people often tell themselves a comforting story: “I don’t drink in the morning, I don’t have physical withdrawals, so I don’t have a problem.” It’s a common narrative, but one that addiction loves to use as a disguise. The truth is, addiction isn’t just about the obvious signs. It’s about the deeper, more subtle ways it takes root in your life—causing anxiety, harming relationships, deepening depression, and even preventing you from reaching your goals.
In my therapy sessions, I challenge my clients to look at their relationship with alcohol honestly. Why? Because I’ve been there, and your addiction can’t bullsh*t someone who’s been deceived by their own addiction before.
Calling Out the Lies of Addiction
One of the hardest things to accept when you’re struggling with alcohol is that it’s causing more damage than you realise. Maybe you’ve felt intense anxiety after a night of drinking. Maybe you’ve hurt someone you care about or found yourself stuck in a cycle of depression, questioning your worth. Maybe your drinking has contributed to the breakdown of a relationship or stopped you from pursuing the goals you once had. And yet, despite all that, you still keep drinking.
Sound familiar?
That’s the insidious nature of addiction. It convinces you that because you don’t fit a specific mold—like drinking in the morning or feeling withdrawal symptoms—you’re not “addicted.” But addiction wears many masks, and one of its greatest tricks is convincing you that you’re in control when, really, it’s quietly running your life.
Why I Push My Clients to Face the Truth
I’m not the kind of therapist who just sits back and nods along while you talk. I’m here to challenge you, to make you question the stories you’re telling yourself, and to guide you in uncovering the truth that addiction tries so hard to hide. And trust me, I’m not easily fooled.
I’ve been in the grip of alcohol and drug addiction myself. I know what it’s like to lie to yourself, to tell yourself it’s not that bad, and to downplay the consequences of your actions. But I also know what it’s like to come out the other side and face those lies head-on. That’s why I push my clients—because I know the stakes. I know how high the cost can be when you let addiction run the show.
You can’t bullsh*t someone who’s been where you are.
Facing the Hard Questions
In therapy, I ask the hard questions. Has substances ever left you anxious or depressed? Has it hurt the people you love or ended relationships that were important to you? Has it stopped you from achieving your goals, the ones you’ve worked hard for?
If the answer is yes, then it’s time to stop letting addiction call the shots. It’s time to stop pretending that because you’re not drinking in the morning, or because you can “stop anytime,” there’s no problem.
I challenge my clients because I want them to wake up to the truth. Addiction isn’t going to fix itself. If you keep giving it excuses, it will keep taking more from you—your peace of mind, your relationships, your future.
The Path to Honest Healing
Confronting addiction is hard. It forces you to strip away the layers of denial and truly see the impact alcohol has had on your life. But once you do that, the real healing can begin.
I know what’s possible when you stop letting addiction run the show. I’ve lived it. I’ve built a life in sobriety that’s more fulfilling than anything I ever imagined when I was stuck in the cycle of drinking. And that’s why I’m committed to helping my clients reach that same place.
I’m not here to coddle you or sugar coat the truth. I’m here to help you take back control. If you’re ready to face the hard questions and make real changes, then I’m ready to walk alongside you every step of the way.
